A New Jersey Company wants to build a 220,000 square foot warehouse on Route 303 in Valley Cottage. They are using the wrong metrics to determine the amount of truck traffic and air pollution this will amass. They are planning to have bays for 53 diesel trucks (and a similar amount for “regular trucks” along with parking for 250 cars) all of which spew harmful particulate matter into the air and get deep into the lungs especially of young and vulnerable people.
There are 4 schools, 2 nursing homes, 1 mental health center and an animal hospital in the area as well as a shopping center - and the disastrous intersection of 303 and Christian Herald Road area.
Rockland County has recently been awarded a letter D for air quality from the American Lung Cancer Association, and we have high rates of asthma, lung and heart disease. This toxic mix in our air also affects babies in utero and can lead to birth defects and learning disabilities in infants and children.
Clarkstown’s local laws allow for 24/7 work, so unless we use our voices to say NO, we can expect 24/7 light, noise & air pollution. This type of combined pollution also affects the mental health of anyone subjected to it.
Lastly, this project will negatively impact on the wetlands (despite recently passing the Wetlands Protection Act)! Wetlands are great carbon sinks; they help protect against flooding and to keep our groundwater safe, acting as filters.
Let’s not be the community who says, “What happened?” Let’s be the community that stands together against over development and environmental damage!
