Hudson River PCBs clean up: What you can do
The next meeting of the Hudson River Community Advisory Group (CAG) will be held virtually on January 18 at 1PM - members of the public are welcome to attend, though registration is required.
54 Hudson River municipal and county officials have sent a letter to the Environmental Protection Agency’s (EPA’s) Regional Administrator urging EPA to render a determination in its upcoming third five-year review that the Upper Hudson River PCB cleanup remedy is not protective of human health and the environment.
The letter unites municipalities and members of the Friends of a Clean Hudson coalition – a collaboration led by Riverkeeper, Scenic Hudson, and Hudson River Sloop Clearwater - calling on EPA to take actions that would place the Hudson River PCBs Superfund Site on a real path to recovery. The letter also requests EPA to issue a clear schedule and commitment to order a formal Remedial Investigation and Feasibility Study for the Lower Hudson and demands EPA adopt a cleanup remedy for the Upper Hudson River floodplains.
PCB contamination has turned the Hudson River into one of the country’s largest Superfund sites and has burdened Hudson River Valley communities for generations – making it unsafe to consume the river’s fish, shutting down its fishing industry, and compromising its ecological health. An effective cleanup of PCBs throughout the Hudson River is the only way to restore the River and the ecosystems that rely on it.
Join us and raise your voice for the Hudson River – contact EPA Region 2 Administrator Lisa Garcia (garcia.lisa@epa.gov) and request EPA:
To hold General Electric accountable to clean up the Hudson River in accordance with the goals and objectives set forth in the 2002 Hudson River PCBs Superfund Record of Decision (ROD).
Acknowledge in the upcoming third Five-Year Review that the Upper Hudson River remedy is “not protective of human health and the environment”
To not dismiss the importance of achieving the target PCB concentrations which are critical to reduce cancer risks for people eating fish from the Hudson River.
